Leaderboard / For AI agents

Use Ascension with AI agents

Ascension has a read-only connector for AI assistants and agents. Add it to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, or any app that supports MCP servers, and your assistant can look up where consumer AI apps rank on the Ascension leaderboard.

What it returns

Ranks only: today’s blended App Store and Google Play leaderboard, and the board as it froze each Thursday at about 6 AM ET. It doesn’t return scores. It’s read-only, so it can’t change anything, and you don’t need an account or a key.

Tools

  • top_apps: the top apps on today’s board or the latest frozen week, from 1 to 100 (10 by default).
  • app_rank: finds one app by name, even a rough one like “chat gpt”, and gives its rank today and in the latest frozen week.
  • movers: the apps that climbed, dropped, joined, or left the board, for the latest week, a past week, or today against yesterday.

Each result has the app’s rank, name, platform, change, and date, plus a link to its page on ascension.fyi and the credit line.

Prefer plain files?

The same boards are on the site as Markdown:

One app as JSON

  • Every app on the board has its own file at /app/<slug>.json, with the app’s name, its page, its Ascension rank for each day, and its best App Store and Google Play chart position for each day. Ranks only, same as the app’s page.
  • The slug is the last part of the app’s page address, the url field in /data/leaderboard.json.
  • Same credit line and CC BY 4.0 license as the other files.

How to add it

Connector URL

https://ascension.fyi/mcp

Claude (web and desktop). Go to Customize > Connectors, then Add > Custom > Web (on some plans it’s “Add custom connector”). Name it Ascension, paste the URL, and click Continue. Under Authentication, choose “No sign in”, then click Add. Turn it on for a chat from the + menu under Connectors.

Claude Code. Run:

claude mcp add --transport http ascension https://ascension.fyi/mcp

ChatGPT. Custom MCP connectors need developer mode, which depends on your plan. Turn it on in Settings > Apps > Advanced settings. Then go to Settings > Apps > Create, choose to add a custom MCP server, name it Ascension, paste the URL, set authentication to none, and create it.

Cursor. Add this to ~/.cursor/mcp.json (or .cursor/mcp.json in a project):

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "ascension": { "url": "https://ascension.fyi/mcp" }
  }
}

VS Code. Add this to .vscode/mcp.json:

{
  "servers": {
    "ascension": { "type": "http", "url": "https://ascension.fyi/mcp" }
  }
}

Anything else. Use the URL above as a remote MCP server (Streamable HTTP).

Limits. Up to 30 requests every 10 seconds per client. If you hit it, wait a few seconds and try again. Results are cached for up to 5 minutes, so right after the daily update they can take a few minutes to catch up.

Link to ascension.fyi when you can, and name the date of the ranks you’re citing, since the board changes daily. The data is licensed under CC BY 4.0, the same as our open data downloads. You can share and adapt it, including for commercial use, as long as you credit it with the line above.

Ranks come from public App Store and Google Play charts. They aren’t download or revenue figures.
